Agrigento

9/20/2015

By Terri Dion

We left Palermo and headed south.  As we lurched through road construction, we enjoyed the Sicilian countryside and learned a bit of Italian.  Buongiorno-good day, ciao-informal hello or good-bye, vino bianco-white wine, etc.  After an hour’s practice we’re confident we can navigate through Italy on our own-or maybe not.

Lunch was seaside.  T n’ T (Terry and Terri) treated the group to a surprise lunch.  Everyone enjoyed the unexpected treat and our guide Daniel dubbed T n’ T Dynamite!  I like it.   After lunch we planned to dip in the Mediterranean but unexpected winds and the resulting waves kept us from going more than waist deep.

Enough fun, now back to the hard work of the traveler…  We headed to the Greek ruins of Agrigento.  Sicily is situated right in the center of the Mediterranean and though it’s now part of Italy it was once Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arabic, Norman, and who knows how many other cultures.  The ruins are spectacular.

Fortunately the heat has broken and a breeze (actually a strong wind) cooled us as we walked among the ruins for a couple hours.  Afterwards, we checked into our hotel and split about equally among those who headed for the hotel swimming pool, the bar and the bed (for those still dealing with jet lag).

September 16 Departure Gruoup
An E-mail from our Sept 12 departure group let us know we were getting the better part of the major weather front moving through the Mediterranean area.  They encountered rain and hail.  We’re happy we only had wind and are awaiting photos of their experience!
