We had a lovely morning cruising the Seine. I was struck by the beauty of the countryside. The riverbanks were dotted with small villages and between open farm land. In the US the banks of this beautiful river would have been lined with homes. The morning agenda included an excellent lecture on Joan of Arc, who was tried for heresy and burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431. In the afternoon we enjoyed a two hour walking tour of the medieval city of Rouen, capital of Normandy. We enjoyed the spectacular Gothic Notre Dame Cathedral, often painted by Claude Monet. The interior is as beautiful as the outside and is the burial place of Richard the Lionheart, English king and Norman duke. Once again out on the streets we admired the famous Gros Horloge, a 16th-century astronomical clock. Like Vernon, we viewed a number of half-timbered buildings.
