Friday - A Tour of Lisbon

5/15/2017

Friday was a busy day.  We were up early for another wonderful huge breakfast and on the bus at 8:30 am.  We had a local guide for the day and started out with a city tour.

Lisbon is a very safe and clean city.  After the great earthquake in 1755 the city had to start over with many new buildings.  They built them in a very uniform style just to get them completed.  The result is beautiful!  They use many beautiful tiles to add color and beauty.  The tiles also are used to protect against the elements.

Portugal is very proud of its place in history during the 5th018th centuries known as the Age of Discovery.

Famous explorers who represented Portugal during that time were Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus,  Henry the Navigator, Pedro Alvares Cabral, and Ferdinand Magellan.
Off to the Monument of Discoveries, Jeronimo's Monastery UNESCO, and the Tower of Belem , UNESCO.

After Belem we enjoyed another "TNT" surprise.  Our guide, Beth, picked up a box of Pasteis de Belem, which are delicious pastries filled with a custard in a warm pastry shell. Yummmm...

PictureDinner and Fado Music
We got back to the hotel in time for a bit of a rest and then a special evening at a local restaurant for more wonderful food, wine , and an evening of Fado music performed by a guitar trio and 2 singers.  Fado is a uniquely Portuguese genre of music which can be traced to the 19th century and, perhaps, earlier.  Generally the songs depict a sense of longing and loss, giving them a mournful, melancholy sound.  It was a wonderful night.  We were all ready for a good night's sleep after the full day !

So many photos of this trip are flowing in I just can't use them all because of space constraints.  I'm going to add a few to the bottom of each post so you can see how much fun our travelers are having.  Here are a few from Terry Johnson, Steve Pestorius, Darryl Cerusak, Doug Doerfler, Mel and Lyn Whaley and Moe and Sid Caba.  These photos are not necessarily in chronological order.

Steve and Carol enjoyed Ginja, a portuguese liqueur, served in a dark chocolate cup. Another T'nT surprise.
