Far Away Places - South Africa Fee: $5 Terri Dion Thursday 12-2 pm 1/28/2016*
  • South Africa is the wealthiest and most developed country in Africa. It’s the birthplace of Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Even Gandhi lived there for a time. Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant there in 1967. Today prolific wildlife, stunning natural beauty, and vibrant cultures contrast with incidents of violence and high crime rates. Post apartheid South Africa is a fascinating place!  Terri will be joined by Bill and Patty Hartley, frequent travelers to South Africa.
Discussion of No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Fee: $5 Carol Bland Thursday 10-11:30 am 3/17/2016*
  • Participants will have read the book in advance, and the class will follow a discussion format. This is the first book in the series, which has sold over 5 million copies in 39 languages, by Alexander McCall Smith. The book reflects his extensive knowledge of and love for the land and people of Africa. The author recreates the beauty of Botswana and focuses on some of the issues of the country. Through colorful characters, humor, and entertaining elements of plot, the book explores philosophical and moral codes which raise universal questions of right and wrong. Come join us for a lively discussion.
