- During the annual flood on the delta, all the 'critters' come to enjoy the water and new growth. Travel is by dugout canoe...This class is a photo essay of the 'peaceable kingdom'.
Far Away Places - South Africa Fee: $5 Terri Dion Thursday 12-2 pm 1/28/2016*
- South Africa is the wealthiest and most developed country in Africa. It’s the birthplace of Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Even Gandhi lived there for a time. Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant there in 1967. Today prolific wildlife, stunning natural beauty, and vibrant cultures contrast with incidents of violence and high crime rates. Post apartheid South Africa is a fascinating place! Terri will be joined by Bill and Patty Hartley, frequent travelers to South Africa.
- Participants will have read the book in advance, and the class will follow a discussion format. This is the first book in the series, which has sold over 5 million copies in 39 languages, by Alexander McCall Smith. The book reflects his extensive knowledge of and love for the land and people of Africa. The author recreates the beauty of Botswana and focuses on some of the issues of the country. Through colorful characters, humor, and entertaining elements of plot, the book explores philosophical and moral codes which raise universal questions of right and wrong. Come join us for a lively discussion.

- There are a thousand things to do in the last few weeks before leaving for a trip. We’ll give you a blueprint to insure you don’t forget a thing! We’ll cover everything from getting a passport to packing your bag and walking out the door. Packing is often a challenge and different types of trips require different strategies, e.g. packing for a road trip is very different from packing for a safari. We’ll talk about the differences and do a live demonstration. This session assumes you’ve already planned your trip.

- Thinking of a winter vacation? Or perhaps a gift of travel this holiday season? This is the class for you. We’ll get down to the nitty gritty of travel - transportation, shoes, toilets, money, language, food, tipping, shopping, dealing with difficult situations and being the Beautiful American instead of the Ugly American. Terri will share tips for the novice and experienced traveler, and class participants will share their own.
- This class is an overview of South Africa (SA) beginning with apartheid, the former policy of racial segregation in SA, to the election of Nelson Mandela as president. Topics will include the indigenous people and colonial settlers of SA, apartheid system and impact on all occupants of SA, how Mandela emerged as president and the challenges that the country currently faces. There will be a comparison of segregation in the USA and apartheid in SA with lively discussions of the two systems. Juanita traveled to SA and Zimbabwe when Mandela was president with the goals of being in the presence of a man so forgiving and to learn more about the country of her ancestors and she will share what she brought back from her 1997 trip. Some of the activities for this class will include a review of books, viewing of parts of movies, reading poems, lectures, participative activities and each session ends with open discussions, Q&As and an evaluation of the information and presentation.
